Guam Catch the Wave: Day 2

If you're reading this without having read Day 1, go back!  It explains everything.

So having slept a new record for a lock-in (according to my Fitbit), I was ready (well, not exactly) to cease the day!  I figured I needed to start cooking the kids breakfast.  But to my surprise and very full heart, we had kids already flipping pancakes and scrambling eggs!  (And it was good too!!!)

After breakfast, we had our final session.  (I'm glad we did three on the first day because we were SLEEPY!)

With our session wrapped up, we headed out for some fun activities to take the place our our missed stay at PIC.  We decided on Inarajan Pools and Jeff's Pirate Cove (argh!)

Inarajan is village in south Guam. They have this really amazing natural swimming pool created from lava rock, the reef, and water that flows through and over the rocks.  The kids loved it as we could swim, snorkel, and jump from the platform.  Perry loved it too! :)

At about 3pm, the pancakes and eggs wore off.  So, we decided to go to Jeff's Pirate Cove (argh!). Jeff's is really cool restaurant on the beach in south Guam. It is reportedly where pirates used to come to shore and it's where Sergeant Yokoi (Japanese Army) was found and captured in 1972 after hiding in the jungles of Guam for 28 years after the war! After the war, the US Military had used this cove as a rehab center with a beer garden, lodging, horseshoe pits, and a fried chicken shack.  (We need more fried chicken shacks.) This was all destroyed by a typhoon in 1949.

So who is Jeff? He lived in Guam for a while as a kid.  After getting a degree in Hotel Restuarant Management, and not loving business on the mainland, he came back to Guam where he had a series of jobs until he bought the Pirate Cove. Jeff is a super generous guy.  He saw our group, and probably since it was full of Micronesians, he probably assumed many had never been there before. So he gave us all bandanas and took a picture with us!

While we were there, we toured the museum...

Visited the bunker

Played and/or cheered on some games...

And enjoyed a photoshoot

I think year 17 of Catch the Wave was pretty amazing, despite the fact it was totally made up as we went.  (Except the lessons. I did actually prepare those.  But I had to make up some games as we went. ha ha)

Catch the Wave Guam: Day 1

This year's Catch the Wave theme was Never Alone.  Our four sessions dealt with the topic that though we may feel alone, God is always with us.

  • Session 1 was an introduction to the top of loneliness along with definitions, facts, statistics, Bible verses, etc.  (Scripture focus: Psalm 102:6-7)
  • Session 2 shared about how the Holy Spirit was sent to us after Jesus died, and how God is always with us. (Scripture focus: Acts 2:1-4 & Joshua 1:9)
  • Session 3 discussed how we had the family of God--not just those in our church but from around the world!  (Scripture focus: Ephesians 2:19-22
  • Session 4 shared how we can help others when they are feeling lonely (Scripture focus: 1 Peter 4:8-11)

Our retreat was going to be a hotel stay at Pacific Island Club.  But when no one books the hotel and there's an aircraft carrier on island, no one is going to a hotel (or renting a car...or finding a parking spot...or getting a seat at a restaurant.)  The USS Ronald Reagan came to shore on Wednesday for a couple of days of R&R.  I'm sure those Naval men and women had a well-deserved break coming.

We called a "family meeting" and took the problem to the kids.  They were super amazing. No one complained, and they all just went with the flow.  So we improvised.  Our hotel became the church.  Our restaurant the church kitchen.  Our beds the pews.  Our showers, my shower.  It was a blast!  (I am still tired)

Session 1 kicked off with a few rounds of Would You Rather followed by some really great music lead by Perry & the Guam Bunch.  (That is now the name of Perry's band...Perry & the Guam Bunch)

With just a short break, we sent the youth pastor to buy groceries while we jumped into Session 2.  Nothing like a nice round of Hide & Seek with high school kids.  They had some excellent hiding spots! (I thought I took pictures. I guess I didn't.)

After Session 2, it was time to go find some supper.  We went out to get carry-out from Jamaican Grill.  And when you send the girls on a mission, we just might come back with 2 gallons of ice cream!

After supper we had our third session.  We had 15 participants, and we are divided into small groups throughout the entire retreat.  Perry and I were the yellow group--the best group, of course. (These are probably gang signs. Islanders throw around a lot of gang signs. They have no idea.)

With three sessions down, let the fun begin!

We had games set up...

And continued to jam with Perry & the Guam Bunch

And we made forts to house more games...

And did more jamming with Perry & the Guam Bunch...

Then at about 11pm we kicked off the movie, I still Believe. It is the story of musician Jeremy Camp.  If you haven't watched it, it's a really good movie!

Thankfully, I had a pillow.  Most kids didn't. I used my beach towel for a blanket.  We had some creative sleeping set-ups.

The strangest part of it all, my Fitbit showed I slept more at this lock-in than I had in about six weeks.  I do not understand.  (We kind of didn't get up until 9am. ha ha)  But I still felt like I had been hit by the aircraft carrier that morning, so I'm not sure of the accuracy for my Fitbit.

Day 1 was amazing. And honestly, not having a hotel was probably the best thing that could have happened.  Our entire retreat was Never Alone.  We needed to be building relationships and getting to know each other.  At PIC, we would have been going down waterslides and hanging in the pool. It wouldn't have been the same.

Stay tuned for Day 2!!!

A Couple of Saipan Ministry Days

I have spent a lot of Father's Days on the islands over the last 20+ years: Guam, Saipan, Chuuk, and the Philippines.  This year was Saipan.

I actually didn't expect any men to come to church that day.  (The couple of men who do attend the church are off island with their families.)  But we had a visitor who had seen the new church sign walking by the week before, so he and his daughter visited.  Of course, we had gifts for our fathers! (All the kids took one home for their dads.)

On Tuesday, we had our second Summer Movie & Bible study day.  We took the kids to see Angry Birds 2. (I had not seen Angry Birds original...or played the game, but I guess it wasn't necessary to have a background in Angry Birds history.)

After the movie, we had a very popular meal of corn dogs. (Who knew they were so loved!?) Here are the girls hiding from the camera. (Ha! Like they're shy.)

Our Bible story went along with the movie and was about how God doesn't necessarily want us to be angry and how we should love our neighbor.

We made windchimes that had a bird on it to remind us of today's lesson. The craft said "God is with you always" (or something like that).

We played a game that we made up that ended up being popular.  Like in angry birds, we were slinging bird eggs (aka ping pong balls) into various buckets with different points. The first round was on flat ground...the second round was from the second story.

Twas a fun couple of days!

Perry's Day Out

We did another trip around the island.

Perry got to go cave exploring...

Visit some latte stone huts...

Go to Bonzaii Cliff (no one jumped, well, at least not today...)...

Eat lunch by the ocean...

And have afternoon tea with new friends...

Perry did not enjoy smoothies at the beach, as the gnats were the worst we have ever seen...

Ashley's Story

Because Ashley will never write this, Perry and I have decided this trip to Saipan needs told.  Ashley taught with me for one year in Saipan. Then I moved to Guam, and she would visit Guam, and I would visit Saipan.  She's lived several places since...Oregon, Maui, and Tennessee.  For a few summers, Ashley would travel with me. Then she moved to Maui. I guess once you live on an island you don't necessarily need a summer on another island.

Ashley was supposed to have arrived on Thursday night.  She got here Saturday morning.  32 hours late.

Here flight from Denver started out like any flight.  Meal service begins quickly.  They want to stuff you, turn off the lights, and hope you'll sleep. (If only....)  At some point through meal service, the pilots detected an engine issue.  Of course, it's better to play it safe than get out over the Pacific and need to land on Midway, so they diverted the flight to San Francisco.

What was supposed to be a couple hour delay, ended up being hours.  They had to change planes.  Crew times out, so they need a new crew. But the most mind-blowing part of the entire story, is they were delayed an additional hour because someone forgot to scan the bags.  WHO FORGETS TO SCAN THE BAGS?

They had already taxied from the gate...then sat...and sat....and sat.  Eventually, the pilot comes on that there was an issue at the gate, and they were just trying to get it resolved to take off.  Well, the issue was the bags weren't scanned before loading them on the new plane. So, they had to go back to the gate and rescan all the bags. More than one hour.

Therefore, Ashley is 9 hours late arriving to Narita.  She should have already been in Saipan before she landed in Narita, so yes, she missed her connecting flight.

Unfortunately, there are only three direct flights to Saipan a week from Narita.  That left the airlines with two options:

1) Send her to Guam the following day and then Saipan the day after that

2) Send her to Korea on a partner airline and then send her on the red eye to Saipan on a partner airline of the partner airline.

3) Keep her in Narita for three nights.

Of course, they chose the second because they only had to pay for one night hotel.

So, Ashley got to have a lovely stay in Narita. She described her room as a 1970s cruise ship cabin. (I took that as small and out of date.)

This is the only pictures she sent of the Old Narita Nikko, but it certainly has a lovely random column...just...there.

After spending the night in Narita, she had a 4pm flight on Asiana to Seoul.  That was only a 3.5 hour out of the way flight.  She had to get her luggage, leave the airport, and then check back in on another airline. Her next flight was on JeJu at 11pm arriving in Saipan at 4am. (Of course, that flight was also delayed.) Jeju is the budge airlines. She didn't even get a drink, not to mention the meal she would have had on her original flight.

And those seat upgrades she paid for so not to have a middle seat...you guessed it. She got middle seats.

Planes and Beaches

It had been a boring couple of days, so I hadn't checked in.  Between the next two Sundays, I need two sermons, four youth sermons with corresponding games and worksheets, and a full day ladies retreat written.  I hadn't written any of it (and my ladies retreat will be a little different than the others which were already scripted...mostly), so I pretty much have been writing nonstop for the last couple of days. (I did a couple of exercise classes and got a massage, so I wasn't totally locked in the sauna [aka house]).

Since my friend who used to live here only has a couple of days left, we went beach hopping this afternoon.  Our first stop was Ladder Beach.  I'm not sure I had been to Ladder Beach in twenty plus years.  The road is crummy, and you really need an SUV to get down it. But since I have an SUV this time, might as well take advantage!  ;) As you can see...gorgeous

It's called Ladder Beach because you used to take a ladder to get down to the beach, but now there are nice steps to get you there. Way easier!

After a little while, we decided to go to a calm beach with shade.  As we drove by the airport, we noticed a random Air Force plane just hanging out.  It was very big.

Thankfully, I'm on a small island and no one came out and arrested me for pulling over and taking a picture of an Air Force plane.

We eventually found our way to Pau Pau Beach. Also beautiful.

While we were floating in the water, a bunch of jets flew over in formation.  Tomorrow is the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Saipan.  There will be several military dignitaries here (hence the Air Force plane) and a fly by is scheduled.  I had thought about going down to see the fly by, but since I saw the practice run, who knows.
