Pisiwi

I am completely convinced that it only rains in Chuuk when I arrive.  Granted, it pretty much rains every day since I am on a tropical island; however, it RAINS when I’m here.

Of course, the church plans this great and awesome picnic on a surrounding island.  (Geography lesson:  Chuuk is not technically an island. It is a state.  I am in the country of the FSM—Federated States of Micronesia.  I am in the state of Chuuk…think Oklahoma.  I am on the island of Weno. ..think Pontotoc County.  Within Weno are many villages…think Ada, Francis, Byng, etc.)  Pisiwi is a deserted island with one amazing beach, deep water to swim, great sea shells to collect, and best of all—it takes one incredible boat ride to get there.  And I’m sure it is even better when it is not raining.

We had to split up in about 3 groups for the speed boat.  They offer me a life jacket, but since I was pretty sure I was the only one in the group that knew how to swim (Filipinos rarely know how to swim…at least in my experience…and I was correct when saying I was pretty much the only one that actually knew how to swim) and there are only two life jackets, I decline.  About three minutes into the ride we were flying across the waves.  It was about 17 times more exhilarating than the white water rafting the week before.  (If I ever get to faster internet, I’ll post a video of a portion of the ride.) I had to hold myself inside the boat—think death grip.  Part of me wanted to experience flying out of the boat at a high rate of speed. However, it would have completely freaked out the Filipinos I was with and my mother would yell at me after she read my blog.

Oh yeah, I was talking about rain.  So, we have a picnic on Pisiwi and it never stops raining.  Well, it actually does stop raining, but the sun never came out. I was a little hacked because I want to look Micronesian when I go home.  However, today after about 15 minutes in the blazing sun, I realized that since my sunblock was in my missing luggage, I probably would have been fried.  It’s best that it rained. Maybe.  There is also the issue of mosquitoes.  I’m guessing I probably have malaria now from all the bites.  Perry looks like one giant tomato from the bites.

I would like to purchase Pisiwi as a souvenir.  How much do you think an island costs?

  1. Probably 20 fat healthy pigs and 50 baskets of lapulapu and parrot fish.
